April showers bring May flowers, and also two new PlayStation 4 games, free for PS Plus subscribers.
That’s down from what Sony used to offer each month. PS+ used to get you two PS4 games, two PS3 games and two PS Vita games that were often cross-buy with PS4, not to mention the occasional PSVR title.
But all good things must come to an end, and as Sony begins paving the way for the PS5’s release, it only makes sense to switch to just PS4 titles (which will presumably carry over to the next-gen).
This month we have two pretty good games on offer.
Overcooked (78% on Metacritic) is a culinary co-op puzzle game where you and a friend try to make increasingly more complex recipes in increasingly more chaotic circumstances. I’ve actually only played the sequel, but it was great fun. You not only have to put together recipes, you have to wash dishes, serve up orders and contend with a host of environmental challenges. If you let something cook too long, it can catch on fire. It’s pretty nutty.
What Remains Of Edith Finch (88% on Metacritic) is what we affectionately term a “walking sim” but it’s one of the best I’ve ever played. There’s no action and not much real gameplay, but as you explore your family’s crazy old house and learn the tragic history of your various aunts and uncles, parents and so forth, you’ll find yourself in awe of the storytelling. It’s a powerful, moving game that left me breathless at the end (you can play the whole thing in three hours or so) and teary-eyed. Such a creative, unique game and story. I loved it.

Overall, I’d say these are both really good offerings for PS+ subscribers. They’ll go live next Wednesday, May 8th. You still have time to download April’s free PlayStation Plus games. See what those are right here.
