I think we can still say VR is in its infancy. The various headsets are still finding new adopters and as a result, more game developers are jumping on to deliver new exciting titles to enjoy. Of course, there are already a plethora of great video game titles to go through right now but if you’re looking towards the future at what games you should keep tabs on then let us share some already hyped picks.

While there are a few different VR headsets available such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and the PlayStation VR, we are not focusing on any particular platform. Instead, we are just sharing what games have been announced for VR in general. This could mean that a game within the list below is an exclusive so make sure to take a look at the platforms it’s releasing on. At any rate, here are our current picks of the most anticipated VR video games that are not ranked in any particular order.

Keep this list bookmarked as we’ll continue to look out for new exciting VR video games to include below.

#8 Defector

  • Developer: Twisted Pixel Games
  • Publisher: Oculus Studios
  • Platforms: Oculus Rift
  • Release: TBD

If you’re a fan of spy movies and wanted to star in your own espionage adventure then development studio Twisted Pixel has something up their sleeves just for you. Defector is an Oculus Rift exclusive title that puts players into the role of an international spy full of tough choices and non-stop action. What we know so far about the game is that Defector will have players take on the role of a spy but instead of being an on-rails sort of shooter, there is a deeper narrative journey.

Apparently, within the upcoming title, players will be able to make certain choices throughout various scenarios. You’ll have to think on your toes but when the time calls for it, using a bit more force to progress the journey is something you’ll likely find yourself enduring. We’ve already seen a glimpse into the game where players are dealing with a world renown criminal that ends up being a gunfight followed by leaping out of a plane into the open skies.

As it stands right now, the game is still slated to come out sometime this year. Since Twisted Pixel has a good track record when it comes to VR, we are expecting great things with this upcoming IP when it finally releases into the market.

#7 Lone Echo 2

  • Developer: Ready at Dawn
  • Publisher: Oculus Studios
  • Platforms: Oculus Rift
  • Release: 2018

Lone Echo was a fantastic VR video game and it made for quite a quick journey. Visually, the title was stunning and offered a bit of realism but the narrative mystery is one that easily kept you on the edge of your seat as you attempted to uncover more details. Within the first installment, players were put into the role of an android who was aiding a female astronaut conducting experiments in space. After a strange anomaly occurs, the duo had to look after each other and attempt a means to discover what was happening and how to return home.

This epic journey wrapped up on a bit of a cliffhanger and luckily the title was well-received allowing the development team over at Ready at Dawn studios to keep the narrative going with a sequel. Lone Echo 2 picks up right after the events of the first installment where Jack and Liv are onboard a new ship and likely must deal with another set of oddity situations that can prove to be yet another thrilling mystery journey.

#6 Wolfenstein Cyberpilot

  • Developer: MachineGames
  • Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
  • Platforms: HTC Vive, PlayStation VR
  • Release: 2019

The latest reboot of the Wolfenstein franchise proved to be a hit and while only two main video game titles have released into the market, a VR spin-off is in the works. So far the game appears to be releasing on the HTC Vive and the PlayStation VR sometime next year, 2019. MachineGames is behind the development and there haven’t been too many details revealed about the upcoming title just yet. What we know so far is that the game will take place about twenty years after the events of Wolfenstein: The New Colossus where players will be taking on the role of a person named The Hacker.

This protagonist is aiding the French resistance by hacking into the Nazi party robotics and weaponry to use against them. We’re also told that this journey will be free from rails meaning that you won’t be mindlessly playing at a specific part but instead giving more freedom on where you roam.

#5 Vacation Simulator

  • Developer: Owlchemy Labs
  • Publisher: Owlchemy Labs
  • Platforms: HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift
  • Release: 2018

One of the video game titles that was a quick hit for VR simulators was Job Simulator. The game put players into a cartoonish world ran by robots while performing standard jobs such as running a convenience store or being a mechanic. The whole title was a delight to play and offered a fun experience on the rather mundane nine to five jobs. A new installment that is being worked on for release sometime this year is Vacation Simulator which takes the same universe but puts players into standard vacation spot scenarios.

From what we know, this game will play out similar to Job Simulator but with a more outdoor adventure element. We are curious as to if the developers opted to bring in any new elements or if there will be a particular campaign to enjoy. Regardless, this game is easily being added to lists for a VR title worth keeping tabs on.

#4 Stormland

  • Developer: Insomniac Games
  • Publisher: Oculus Studios
  • Platforms: Oculus Rift
  • Release: 2019

Insomniac Games alone should perk your ears just a little as the development studio is known for a number of great works. The latest being Spider-Man, one of the most anticipated and well-received video game for the PlayStation 4 this year which you can view our Before You Buy coverage right here. Coming up is a brand new game and one that’s set to be an Oculus Rift exclusive. Known as Stormland, this game puts players into the body of an android.

So far we know that the game’s protagonist is a gardener that ends up becoming dormant after an attack on his Homeland. Centuries past by when you come back online and attempt to fix your body along with reclaiming your land. We expect not only an immersive world to explore but finely tuned gameplay mechanics. Unfortunately, outside of 2019, we don’t have a specific date to attach on this project quite yet. With that said, it’s already gained quite a bit of hype and we can’t wait to see what the development studio has in store for us.

#3 The Walking Dead Saints & Sinners

  • Developer: Skydance Interactive
  • Publisher: Skybound Entertainment
  • Platforms: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive
  • Release: 2019

The Walking Dead has become a massive franchise. From its humble beginnings of a comic book series, The Walking Dead has spanned into a television drama, several novels, toy merchandise and of course video games. Sure not every game was a hit but with Skybound being in conjunction with The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, we have some faith in the game. This is another video game that doesn’t have too many details at the moment even though it was announced back in 2017. However, there is some basic synopsis we can share.

Within the game narrative, players will be dropped into the center of New Orleans who must survive the pandemic. Don’t write this game off as an on-rails zombie shooter. Instead, there is seemingly a deeper narrative campaign gamers can enjoy. Apparently, players will be presented with a series of tough choices that they will have to make which will steer you towards being a Saint or a Sinner.

At this point it’s unknown if there will be multiple endings because of the choices player will be presented with but we’re certainly looking to find out more. Much like most of the games on this list, there isn’t a specific release date attached the project other than sometime in 2019.

#2 Gungrave VR

  • Developer: Iggymob

Taking place after the events of Gungrave: Overdose, players will pick up with Grave in a world where he seems to finally have some peace until SEED Infected begin to pop up around the world leaving Grave to deal with the mess.

This will be a fast-pace non-stop action title that will go from the first-person perspective to third-person depending on the narrative situation. We’re also looking at an episodic video game title where players can purchase episodes separately otherwise players can purchase the game fully at retail for $39.99 when it launches sometime this Fall for the PlayStation 4.

#1 Ghost Giant

  • Developer: Zoink

Currently, Ghost Giant is heading to the PlayStation VR, but developers have yet to fully determine a release date.
